When it comes to tallow for skincare, you'll often hear "grass-fed" emphasized, and there's a good reason for that! Think of it like this: just as a healthy diet influences our own bodies, what an animal eats affects the quality of its fat.
Cows that are grass-fed (and ideally "grass-finished," meaning they eat grass their entire lives) tend to produce tallow that's richer in certain beneficial compounds. This includes things like specific fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). These elements are simply more concentrated in the tallow when the animals have a natural, grass-rich diet.
So, when you use grass-fed tallow on your skin, you're getting a product that's packed with a more abundant array of these nourishing components, which can contribute to a more vibrant and well-conditioned complexion. It's all about providing your skin with the best possible natural goodness!
Yes! Our balms are particularly effective as a moisturizer after retinol treatments or on dry, flaky patches. Since they contain natural oils and fats, they help maintain a healthy, radiant complexion.
You might have heard the term 'non-comedogenic' when talking about skincare, and it basically refers to how likely an ingredient is to clog your pores. There's a scale that helps give us an idea, usually from 0 to 5, where a lower number means it's less likely to cause congestion.
The great news about tallow is that it typically scores very low on this scale, often 1 or 2. This is really important because it suggests that tallow tends to work harmoniously with your skin. Because its structure is so similar to our own skin's natural oils, it absorbs beautifully without feeling heavy or sitting on the surface. This helps keep your skin feeling breathable and looking clear, contributing to an overall healthy-looking complexion
Absolutely! Our products are crafted with natural ingredients and made in small batches to ensure quality and purity. Tallow's low risk of clogging pores, combined with natural botanical scents or unscented options, makes them gentle enough for sensitive skin. However, we recommend doing a patch test if you're prone to allergies or sensitivities.
Apply a small amount of balm to clean, dry skin, and massage gently until absorbed. Our balms work well for facial hydration, dry patches, or as a body moisturizer. For facial use, especially on sensitive or reactive skin, start with a small amount and build up as needed. Use daily or as needed to nourish and protect your skin.
Once opened, your poured or whipped balm should last 12-18 months, although, I recommend keeping for just a year.
Yes! We offer various scents such as Bare (unscented), Baby Face, 1969, I Need a Vacation, and Which Way Western Man. Each scent is crafted from natural essential oils or botanical extracts, or available unscented for sensitive noses.
Making balms in small batches allows us to focus on quality, freshness, and consistency. This approach ensures you receive a high-quality, nourishing product with maximum potency of ingredients. It also allows us to maintain artisanal craftsmanship and minimize waste, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and natural beauty.
How to Revive a Melted Balm
Unfortunately it happens. With a melting point of 85 degrees, it doesn't take much for your tallow balm to melt. Learn how to revive or harden a melted tallow balm here:
- POURED BALM: simply give it a little whirl and put it in the fridge. It won't take long to set up. If you live in a warm climate, we recommend storing your balm in the fridge for best consistency.
- WHIPPED BALM: a melted whip balm can be disappointing but it's still amazing to use. Just follow these steps:
-
- Warm your balm (jar and all) in a hot-water bath: place it in a pot with about an inch of water and turn on the heat to a simmer. It does not take much heat to melt.
- Once melted, you have two options: start using, or, pour out the contents into a bowl and place the bowl in the fridge to cool. After it's cooled and hardened, with a set of electric beaters, rewhip your balm until desired consistency is reached. Then, scoop your newly whipped balm into back into the jar. You're good to go.
If your tallow balm is feeling soft and a little grainy, it's completely normal! Tallow is a natural product and super sensitive to temperature changes. Don't worry -- your balm is still great to use!
The Science Behind the Texture
Tallow is made up of different types of fatty acids, including saturated and monounsaturated fats. Each of these fats has a different melting point.
- When your balm gets too warm and then cools down slowly or unevenly, the fats crystallize at different rates. This process creates small, hard bits within the otherwise soft balm, resulting in that grainy or bumpy texture.
- The soft texture itself is often caused by warmer temperatures. Tallow has a relatively low melting point, so even at normal room temperature, it can soften significantly. This is especially true in warmer months or if the balm is stored in a warm spot, like a bathroom or a sunny window.
What You Can Do
If the texture bothers you, here are a couple of options:
- Warm it Up: Simply rub a small amount between your fingertips. Your body heat will quickly melt the grainy parts, leaving you with a smooth, soft balm to apply.
- Prevent Future Graininess: Store your tallow balm in a cool, dark place. A cool cupboard or pantry is ideal. Avoid leaving it in your car or near a window where temperatures can fluctuate.
Ultimately, a soft and grainy texture is just a reminder that you're using a pure, natural product without synthetic stabilizers.
Tallow begins to melt at around 85 degrees, so if you live a particularly warm place, I recommend keeping it in the fridge. Other than that, it's perfectly fine at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.
The longevity of our balms depends on usage. Typically, a 2 oz jar of poured balm lasts several weeks with regular use on face and body. Since a little goes a long way, you’ll enjoy long-lasting nourishment and value.
Our products contain beef tallow, which is an animal-derived ingredient, so they are not vegan. However, they are an excellent choice for those seeking natural, ethically sourced animal fats that support skin health.
Absolutely! We source our tallow from just one farm that ensures their cows live a happy and healthy life. I was, personally, a vegan for 10 years and this is extremely important to me.
There's controversy about what can happen to a balm after it's been whipped, especially with the incorporation of honey. The water in the honey and the air that get's whipped can contribute to mold or bacteria growth.
Not to worry! We add a small amount of three natural preservatives to prevent this from happening: Radish Root Ferment, Lactobacillus, and Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract.
Because our products do not contain synthetic preservatives like many common skincare products, spoilage is always a possibility. That being said, in all my years of creating skincare. I've never had product go bad under normal shelf conditions.
Because your whipped balm does not contain synthetic preservatives, it can go through consistency changes during shipping when the temperature rises above 85 degrees.
These consistency changes do not alter the efficacy of your balm and it is still ready to use.
We're taking precautions to prevent this from happening, but during extreme heat, it may not be preventable.
